Court date set for woman accused of starving girl

EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — A Snohomish County judge has ruled that a woman accused of starving and beating her boyfriend’s younger sister is fit for trial.

After state doctors determined Mary Mazalic can assist with her own defense, Superior Court Judge Eric Lucas scheduled her trial for next month, although her attorney says he will likely need more time to prepare.

The Daily Herald (http://is.gd/8P9BgF ) reports the 35-year-old Mukilteo woman is charged with first degree assault of a child and first-degree criminal mistreatment. If convicted, she faces more than a decade in prison.

Prosecutors allege that Mazalic repeatedly beat, starved and burned her boyfriend’s younger sister. The 10-year-old came to live with the couple in 2010.

The girl weighed just 51 pounds when she was removed from the home in August. That’s about two-thirds the weight of a healthy child her age.
