SEATTLE (AP) — The first piece of the Space Shuttle trainer has arrived at the Museum of Flight in Seattle.
The trainer is expected to be the centerpiece of the museum’s new space gallery.
It was built in the 1970s and is unique. Every space shuttle astronaut trained for space flight in the simulator. It looks like a space shuttle without wings.
The trainer is being shipped piece-by-piece from Houston to Seattle, where it will be reassembled and displayed.
Tuesday’s shipment contained three engine bells. They are about nine feet in diameter and weight about 800 pounds each.
The biggest part of the trainer — the crew compartment — is scheduled to be flown from the Johnson Space Center on June 16.
