The Class 4A and 3A state golf championships in 2013 and 2014 are playing through, all the way to Clark County.

“I think it’s great for our kids and for our community,” said Leta Meyer, the athletic director at Heritage as well as a member of the WIAA’s executive board. “It’s a big deal. It’s state. It’s a chance for us to showcase our courses and our community.”

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association announced the approval of the Vancouver area to host the 4A boys and girls as well as the 3A boys and girls tournaments.

The venues are yet to be determined.

Meyer credited the Ashley Shimer of the Vancouver USA Regional Sports Commission for helping with the bid process. The commission, along with Camas athletic director Terry Cavender, nominated the region to host.

“Ashley really worked with the community, the hotel people, the restaurant people, and made it attractive for people to want to come to Vancouver,” Meyer said.

The 2012 4A and 3A state championships will be held May 22-23 in Spokane.

Next year will be the first time state golf has been played in Clark County since 1998. That year, the Class 4A boys played at The Cedars in Brush Prairie, and the 4A girls competed at Tri-Mountain in Ridgefield.

The Vancouver Tennis Center hosted the Class 4A boys and girls state tournaments in 2006, 2008 and 2010, and the 3A event in 2009. However, both events will be held in the Tri-Cities this season.
