RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State has promoted men’s basketball assistant Bobby Lutz to associate head coach.

Coach Mark Gottfried announced Lutz’s new title Friday, saying he “adds an enormous amount of experience and expertise” to the staff.

In his first season on the staff, Lutz helped the Wolfpack reach the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2006. They pulled two upsets to advance to the round of 16 of the NCAA tournament.

Lutz spent 12 seasons as coach at Charlotte and led the 49ers to five 20-win seasons and three NCAA tournament appearances. He spent one season at Iowa State before joining Gottfried’s staff and remains under contract through next April.
