Lebanon challenges Ore. state board on mascots

LEBANON, Ore. (AP) — The Lebanon School Board is not letting go of the Warrior logo without a fight.

The Albany Democrat-Herald (http://is.gd/yJMAFb) reports the board voted 4-1 in favor of a resolution challenging the authority of the state Board of Education to propose a rule banning the use of American Indian mascots in public schools.

The state board is expected to vote in May on the rule requiring 15 high schools to retire their mascots by July 2017.

A state Department of Education spokeswoman says the board has legal authority, and its lawyer vetted the procedure.

If approved, schools such as Lebanon High identified as the Warriors would have to change only their mascots — not their nicknames. Other schools, such as those called the Indians, would change both.
