OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Athletics optioned infielder Josh Donaldson to Triple-A Sacramento on Monday to make room for newly acquired Luke Hughes in their continuing search for a starting third baseman.

Hughes, claimed off waivers from Minnesota a day earlier, arrived in Oakland about two hours before the A’s home game against the Chicago White Sox and was immediately put into the starting lineup by manager Bob Melvin. Hughes was slated to play third base and bat eighth.

The Athletics have needed a third baseman since losing Scott Sizemore to a season-ending knee injury during the team’s first full squad workout in spring training.
