TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire is drawing the line on wine.

Gregoire said Monday that no other state can compete with Washington’s quality. She recalled a trade mission to Europe in which someone asked her about California wine. Her response was: “They make jug wine. We make fine wine.”

She got a loud round of applause from supporters with that comment Monday.

Gregoire’s remarks came as she signed a new capital construction budget that includes $5 million toward a Wine Science Center facility in Richland. She called the project a “personal favorite” of hers.

California has by far the most wineries in the United States. Washington ranks No. 2 in that category.
