PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The city of Eugene wants to crack down on wild parties by going after the hosts.
A potential ordinance debated by the City Council this week would give authorities the power to fine people who throw parties that veer out of control. To run afoul of the law, a person would have to host an alcohol-fueled party in which police witness at least two infractions — such as public urination or excessive noise.
Since the beginning of the school year, police have received more than 550 complaints about parties in the neighborhoods near the University of Oregon.
City officials say the ordinance is unlikely to be approved before the fall because revisions are needed, and they don’t want to hold a public hearing in summer, when most students are away.
