EL PASO, Texas (AP) — Promoters of a June 16 fight between WBC world middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and challenger Andy Lee say the chancellor of the University of Texas System has blocked holding the fight at the Sun Bowl in El Paso.

Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti says chancellor Francisco Cigarroa cited security concerns over border violence when he told Texas-El Paso officials the bout couldn’t be held with UTEP facilities.

That sent Top Rank searching for another venue for the June 16 fight. Moretti said Houston and San Antonio are considered, and arrangements should be made by the weekend.

Moretti said Cigarroa informed Top Rank and UTEP officials of his decision one hour before Top Rank president Bob Arum was to announce the scheduling of the El Paso bout.
