PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Portland Timbers have signed defender Steven Smith, who spent the last nine seasons playing in his native Scotland and England.

Smith, 26, played for Scotland’s Rangers FC from 2003-10, appearing in 55 matches. He moved to England in 2010, playing for Norwich City FC and Preston North End.

He has played in both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League.

Smith, who has been on trial with the Timbers for the past two weeks, played with Portland forward Kris Boyd on the Rangers from 2006-10.

The Timbers also waived midfielder James Marcelin on Wednesday.
