AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A state senator is asking University of Texas System regents to overturn a decision to cancel a high-profile boxing match at the Sun Bowl in El Paso.

El Paso city leaders have protested UT Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa’s decision this week to tell University of Texas-El Paso officials that their stadium cannot host the June 16 fight between Mexico’s Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Ireland’s Andy Lee. He cited a “higher than normal” risk assessment in the border city but provided no details to city officials.

Democratic Sen. Jose Rodriguez of El Paso said Thursday he’ll ask the UT regents to put Cigarroa’s decision on the agenda for their meeting next week in Austin.

Local, state and federal law enforcement say they’re unaware of any security risk associated with the fight.
