ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Some Republican lawmakers at Minnesota’s Capitol have found tax increases they could support. They’re proposing new taxes on the Minnesota Vikings and their fans to pay for the $1 billion stadium proposal moving at the Capitol.
A group of GOP lawmakers said Thursday that’s better than the current plan to use tax revenue from expanding legal gambling.
Rep. Mike Benson of Rochester says when the stadium bill hits the House floor, he’ll try to replace the gambling revenue with an income tax surcharge on Vikings players and executives. He’ll also propose sales taxes on sports memorabilia and online NFL merchandise purchases.
The Vikings oppose game-related taxes. But Sen. David Hann of Eden Prairie says any necessary stadium tax burden should fall on those closest to the game.
