ALBANY, Ore. (AP) — Three men convicted of murdering a roommate and dumping his body in a sleeping bag in the brush along Interstate 5 have been sentenced to life in prison.

The Albany Democrat-Herald reports (http://bit.ly/KiKEvG) that Judge Carol Bispham handed down the mandatory minimum sentences, which include the possibility of parole after 25 years.

Jose Felipe Hernandez-Leiva had been granted asylum in the United States after his role in the civil war in the 1990s in El Salvador.

Investigators say Leiva was beaten during an evening of drinking at an apartment in rural Linn County.

Prosecutor Douglas Marteeny called it “tragic he ended up being killed in the nation he had fled to for safety.”

The three are 25-year-old Edgar Hernandez-Mendoza, 38-year-old Abiu Antonio Padilla and 30-year-old Jose Juarez-Alvarez.
