Josephine County deputy fatally shoots driver

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) -- The Josephine County sheriff's office says deputies fatally shot a driver who rammed a patrol car with a pickup truck.

The sheriff's office says a deputy and reserve deputy were chasing the truck Saturday night after it failed to pull over for a traffic stop.

The deputies say the driver skidded to a stop at Cave Junction, put the pickup truck in reverse and rammed the patrol car.

The deputies shot the driver, identified as 46-year-old Walter Britt Phillips of Cave Junction. He was airlifted to a Medford hospital where he died.

One of the deputies received minor injuries, which required no medical attention.

The shooting is being investigated by a team including Oregon State Police and the district attorney's office.
