Weather Eye: April’s showers carry over to May

It looks like those April showers will turn into May showers as we step into the first day of May. We had plenty of rain in April and I will have the local rainfall reports from your friends and neighbors in the near future. As of 5 p.m. Monday I had recorded 4.05 inches of rain, which is above average for my location.

I am sure there will be plenty of May flowers thanks to those April showers, as the old saying goes. Many gardens may be lagging behind as the soil is really wet in some areas, especially if your soil has clay. I heard from many that this is the case, but also cold-season plants such as lettuce and peas are doing well.

We managed to squeeze out the fourth weekend in a row with mostly dry and mild conditions. No measurable rain officially on Saturday but rain did fall on Sunday, however, towards the end of the day. So we will take that one! So can we manage five in a row?

Monday afternoon it appeared medium-range forecast models do indeed show a nice weekend coming up, if we can get rid of lingering showers early on Saturday, but of course, still a ways off. So, more showers today, a break Wednesday and then more rain and showers Thursday and Friday as a storm system slides by to our south. We could see another 75-80 degree day perhaps early next week, but any extended period of dry and warm weather is still off the horizon as we will remain in a progressive weather pattern.

Meanwhile, May arrives cool and damp with highs this week below average. The snow level dipped in the Cascades down to pass levels at times and will do so today and early Wednesday.

Enjoy your first week of May!
