CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have optioned pitcher Casey Coleman to Triple-A Iowa and recalled pitchers Chris Volstad and Alberto Cabrera from the minor league club.

The Cubs announced the moves before Wednesday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Coleman was recalled Tuesday and got hit hard in a 5-0 loss filling in for Ryan Dempster, who was traded to Texas.

Manager Dale Sveum says Volstad could wind up in the rotation, with Dempster and Paul Maholm being dealt and Matt Garza sidelined lately by fluid in his right triceps. The Cubs hope to have him back Tuesday at San Diego.

Volstad is 0-7 with a 7.94 ERA in nine starts with the Cubs this season. Cabrera, who will work out of the bullpen, has never pitched in the majors.
