Letter: Solve neglect of public spaces

The Columbian
Published: July 31, 2012, 5:00pm

You cannot help but notice the lack of maintenance (especially landscaping) on our roadways, parks and public facilities. The center median weed strips on our roadways are getting ready to seed next year’s crop of weeds.

It is probably too simple of a solution, but why don’t we take more of the nonviolent offenders out of our jails and put them to work on taking care of some of our neglected public facilities? They could maybe earn some time off of their sentences (we let them out early anyway due to overcrowding) and perhaps return to the community through their work efforts some of the funds that we pay to incarcerate them.

Phil Harder, Vancouver
