Esther Short — Cindi Fisher of Vancouver and Aleshanee Akin of Mendocino County, Calif., brought their plea for better mental health care to the Clark County Courthouse on July 24. They are moms of adult children who have been diagnosed with mental illness, and they believe their children’s situations were made worse through the overuse of pharmaceuticals. Fisher and Akin aim to walk 100 miles to protest the problem and to call for more rights for patients and parents. They started in Portland on July 23 at the First Unitarian Church and the Miracles Club before coming to Clark County. They’ll finish in early August at the Western State Hospital in Lakewood.
