NEW YORK (AP) — Traded to the Yankees, Casey McGehee decided to shave his beard in private. No televised grooming, like Jose Reyes had when his dreadlocks were shorn on the MLB Network last winter.
“Reyes might be able to pull it off. I don’t think they want to watch a chubby white guy shave his beard off,” McGehee said Wednesday after reporting to New York.
The 29-year-old was immediately given his first start in pinstripes, playing first base against Baltimore in place of injured Mark Teixeira. He was aware of the Yankees’ rule against facial hair without being told.
