Letter: Silent skies would be alarming

I have a different reaction to Gordon Oliver’s July 22 column, “Freedom, commerce can create quite a din.” As a wife of a retired, now deceased United States Marine, I am overwhelmed with pride and happiness when I hear jets fly overhead. It’s the great sound of freedom.

I lived in Yuma, Ariz., the home of a Marine Corps Air Station, and loved it when jets would fly in and out. It was exciting.

My favorite is the Harrier. Watching it hover is amazing. Noisy? No, it’s the sound of freedom and a reminder that the men and women in the U.S. Armed Forces are protecting us.

I am so grateful to them all, those who served and are serving.
