On Friday August 10, 2012, at approximately 3:45 a.m., Portland Police were called to cover medical personnel at Mall 205 in the Hazelwood neighborhood on the report of a man who had been dumped from a dumpster into the back of a recycling truck.

Officers and medical personnel arrived and talked to the man, identified as 27-year-old Justin Gilpatrick, who told police that he’d been drinking alcohol at a nearby bar when he decided that he was too intoxicated to drive home. Gilpatrick told police that he decided to crawl into a cardboard recycling container to spend the night until he was sober.

At some point after Gilpatrick went to sleep, a Waste Management recycling truck dumped the cardboard into the truck and compacted the contents twice before the driver noticed something wrong and found Gilpatrick inside the truck, suffering from minor injuries.

Gilpatrick was transported to a Portland hospital where he was treated and released.

No criminal charges are expected in this case.
