BALTIMORE (AP) — Manny Machado will make his major league debut at third base for the Baltimore Orioles, who hope the 20-year-old can enhance their bid to reach the playoffs.

Machado, the third overall pick in the 2010 draft, was batting ninth for Baltimore on Thursday night against the Kansas City Royals.

Machado says he’s “super excited” about getting the opportunity to join the big league club. He says, “This is the highest level but I am still going to go out there and try to play my game.”

The Orioles purchased Machado’s contract from Double-A Bowie late Wednesday night.

Buck Showalter says they brought up Machado because the team thinks he can help them win. Baltimore began the day tied with Detroit and Oakland in the wild-card race.
