Letter: Comparison unfounded

The Columbian
Published: August 9, 2012, 5:00pm

I was astounded after reading the absurd Aug. 4 letter, “Liberals lash out at the GOP” by Bill Hughes in which he equated liberalism to communism.

How dare he make such an unsubstantiated accusation?

Obviously, Hughes knows nothing about the workings of U.S. politics and is willing to publicly make such statement based on nothing but his rather bizarre opinions. Any basic textbook on U.S. history will clearly show that liberals have had a positive and profound impact on U.S. politics and the political direction of this country for more than 200 years.

Hughes has the right to disagree with “liberals,” but he doesn’t have the right to equate the actions of loyal and patriotic American liberals with such a profoundly evil set of ideas as communism.
