Russian Kirdyapkin wins gold in Olympic 50K race

LONDON (AP) — Sergei Kirdyapkin of Russia has won the gold medal in the 50-kilometer race walk at the London Games. He did it in 3 hours, 35 minutes, 59 seconds, breaking the Olympic record by more than a minute.

Kirdyapkin finished 54 seconds ahead of Jared Tallent of Australia.

Si Tianfeng of China took bronze in the race along the streets of central London on Saturday.

Kirdyapkin took a commanding lead at the 45-kilometer mark and crossed the finish line near Buckingham Palace. He broke the Olympic record by 1 minute, 10 seconds.

Kirdyapkin failed to finish the race at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
