Letter: Safe Chemicals Act applauded

The Columbian
Published: August 10, 2012, 5:00pm

On July 25, the Safe Chemicals Act passed the U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works committee.

This is the first time this bill has been voted on. Now it’s headed to the Senate floor.

One of my sons was very sick from chemical sensitivity at one point of his life. I feel for other families going through the same experience and don’t think it’s right to put all of the burden on families. Government and business play a role in ensuring that the products put in stores are safe.

I strongly believe that someday we won’t have to worry about toxic chemicals being in everyday products.

The Safe Chemicals Act will fix our broken chemical regulatory system that has allowed toxic flame retardants, bisphenol A, and other toxic chemicals into our homes.

Washington state’s Democratic Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell are both co-sponsors. I want to thank them for standing up to protect American families from toxic chemicals and urge them to support the strongest bill possible.
