LONDON (AP) — The chairman of the British Olympic Association is stepping down later this year.

Colin Moynihan says he wants to prioritize a smooth handover to his successor and ensure a strong sports policy that capitalizes on the London Olympics.

He says his resignation will enable his successor to have ample time to be involved in preparations for the 2014 winter games in Sochi, Russia.

Moynihan has been chairman since 2005. He said Monday that he planned to stay in the role until an election is held in November for his replacement.

The London games, which ended Sunday, saw Britain’s team win 29 gold medals.

The association is responsible for the participation of British and Northern Irish athletes in the Olympics.
