Letter: Baseball enhances community

Kudos for the coverage of the Junior Little League Regional Championship and to the organizers that brought this tournament back to Vancouver USA at Propstra Stadium. It was a great opportunity to take my children to see top-notch youth baseball at a family affordable price, have a hot dog and a pop and not feel like I had to take out a loan to pay for it all.

After the failed effort to bring a minor league team to Vancouver, we are sadly in an area with no major or minor league baseball that doesn't require a day trip to enjoy. Wouldn't it be great to have a regular, affordable option to see a game sitting in the sun and escape from the daily grind, like my boys and I did on a Tuesday afternoon?

If there was a disappointment, it was the small turnout, particularly the evening championship game between two excellent finalist teams that traveled from Hawaii and Southern California to play. Those who did attend saw exciting baseball with many "big league" defensive plays in a 1-0 struggle. It was a game where I found myself wanting extra innings.

Let's hope next time we get more local fans to lend support to the organizers' efforts.
