A woman was given an animal cruelty citation after leaving her dog in a car outside an east Vancouver business Thursday afternoon.

A witness called 911 to report seeing the dog inside a parked car outside the Michael’s store at 16601 S.E. Mill Plain Blvd.

When a Clark County Animal Control officer arrived, someone had broken a window in the car, said Paul Scarpelli, manager of county animal control. The person had taken the black Labrador mix into Michael’s, where staff poured water on it and kept it in an air-conditioned break room to cool it off, he said.

The officer helped the dog’s owner clean up the glass and cited her.

The owner told animal control she had thought her trip would be quick, Scarpelli said.

“They will love you no less if you leave them at home,” he said.
