BOSTON (AP) — Boston College athletic director Gene DeFilippo is stepping down.

DeFilippo took over the BC athletic department in 1997 in the wake of a gambling scandal and presided over its move from the Big East to the Atlantic Coast Conference. He announced on Friday that he is leaving, effective Sept. 30.

DeFilippo was hired as the school tried to recover from a scandal in which 13 football players were kicked off the team for betting on games. A few years later, the school found itself involved in the early wave of conference raiding, leaving its longtime home in the Big East for the ACC.

DeFilippo says he plans to teach courses in sports management and to work as a consultant.
