Letter: Follow Canada's example

Problem: Expensive health care with below-par results.
Solution: Adopt Canada's system in its entirety.
The result: The USA would advance to No. 2 among advanced nations in providing long, healthy, productive lives for its citizens, moving from its present position at No. 7.
The USA would spend 11.8 percent of GDP on health instead of 17.7 percent. Our GDP is $14 billion, the 5.9 percent savings going to a Canadian-style health care system is $831 billion, and the Department of Defense budget is $662 billion.
So going to a more effective health system would pay for our entire defense budget and put $169 billion toward our national debt each year.
