PORTLAND — The Portland Winterhawks will welcome 80 players on Wednesday to the Rose Garden for the start of training camp for their 2012-13 Western Hockey League season.

Players will undergo physicals on Wednesday. The training and tryout portion of the camp will run Thursday through Sunday at the Winterhawks Training Center in Beaverton.

Training camp will include the Neely Cup tournament, which is open to the public.

For the tournament, the players will be divided into four teams for scrimmages. The scrimmages will be held between 4 and 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The third-place scrimmage is at 9 a.m. on Saturday and the championship at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday.

The Winterhawks preseason schedule includes three games in Kennewick on Aug. 31, Sept. 1 and Sept. 2, and two games in Everett on Sept. 7-8. The regular-season begins on Sept. 21 at the Rose Garden against Seattle.

• Winterhawks sign draft pick — The Winterhawks have signed defenseman Keoni Texeira, their top pick in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft. Portland selected Texeira in the second round, 26th overall, in the May draft. Texeira, a native of Fontana, Calif., is expected to play this season with the L.A. Jr. Kings U16 AAA team and join the Winterhawks as a 16-year-old a season later.
