PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates have released struggling pitcher Erik Bedard two days after he lost his 14th game of the season, tied for most in the majors.

The move was made Tuesday before the Pirates hosted St. Louis.

The 33-year-old Bedard went 7-14 with a 5.01 ERA for Pittsburgh after signing a $4.5 million, one-year contract in the offseason. The left-hander pitched well for the first two months before his numbers steadily declined. He was 4-10 over his final 14 starts as his ERA ballooned from 3.12 on May 27 to the worst among Pittsburgh’s starters.

Bedard gave up six runs and six hits in a 7-0 loss to Milwaukee on Sunday.
