Letter: Local trails are outstanding
Thursday, August 30, 2012
I want to share my thank you to Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation for sending my requested pamphlet, "Trails of Clark County." Six gems of trails are described and photographed, with mileage shown for each. Armed with this great little piece, I've now spent enjoyable days rediscovering our area.
Three trails covered: the wide open spaces of Frenchman's Bar/Vancouver Lake; historical and scenic waterfront views of the Columbia River between Vancouver Landing and Marine Park; and natural areas seen from atop the dike between Washougal and Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge. I passed wetlands and watched ducks swim on Burnt Bridge Creek and Salmon Creek. I saw farmland vistas and dense, woodsy areas as we cycled through groves of tall fir trees that reach to the sky far above. One trail followed the sparkling East Fork of the Lewis River to Moulton Falls. It's been exhilarating to cycle again after a 50-year hiatus.
Next time you weary of hearing about political infighting and other heavy news of the day, just pick up your smile and your trails guide and go take a no-cost hike … or a bike. Your soul will thank you.
