New leagues, new schedules

The 4A GSHL consists of Battle Ground, Camas, Evergreen, Heritage, Skyview and Union.

The 3A GSHL consists of Columbia River, Fort Vancouver, Hudson’s Bay, Kelso, Mountain View and Prairie.

The 2A GSHL consists of Aberdeen, Hockinson, Mark Morris, R.A. Long, Ridgefield and Washougal. Aberdeen will be part of the 2A GSHL for football only the next two seasons.

The 1A Trico League will be a nine-team league this season, meaning eight of those teams will dive right into league play as Castle Rock faces Seton Catholic, Ilwaco meets La Center, Kalama takes on Woodland and Stevenson faces Toledo. White Salmon gets the Week 1 non-league assignment.

New surface at McKenzie

Friday’s Fort Vancouver-Evergreen game will be the first varsity football game to be played on McKenzie Stadium’s new FieldTurf surface installed this summer. McKenzie Stadium will host nine Friday night doubleheaders this season. Mountain View vs. Union will be the second game on Friday.

Glance at some of Friday’s games

Fort Vancouver vs. Evergreen: Somebody’s long losing streak will end. Fort Vancouver is riding a 15-game skid. The Trappers’ last win came on Sept. 17, 2010 vs. Washougal (31-14). Evergreen has lost 13 in a row. The Plainsmen’s last win came on Oct. 1, 2010 vs. Battle Ground (38-14). … This is the first meeting between the two schools since 2003.

Camas vs. Oregon City: Many key starters from last season’s Camas team that reached the 3A semifinals are gone, but a few remain, including TE/LB John Norcross. … Junior Reilly Hennessey takes over at QB for the Papermakers. … Oregon City reached the Oregon 6A quarterfinals, losing to Central Catholic 55-33. … The Pioneers return only six starters from last season’s team.

Mountain View vs. Union: Though from the same school district, this is only the third meeting between Union and Mountain View, with the Titans winning both previous meetings. … The Thunder are coming off a season that culminated in their first playoff win since 2004. … The 2011 Thunder were a senior-led squad, meaning they’ll be looking for stars to step up. … With junior Brendin Quinn and sophomore Nolan Henry battling for playing time at QB, there are questions to go along with talent for the Titans. … But success at Union starts and ends with defense, and the Titans should again be difficult to score against.

Heritage vs. Columbia River: Heritage made strides under first-year coach Jack Hathaway last season, winning back-to-back games at the end of the regular season to earn a postseason berth. … Junior E’Lon Mack could be one of the area’s top receivers this season. The Timberwolves hope the junior combo of QB Loren Standiford and Mack will produce big results not just this year, but next. … Experience is a strength at River, with three-year starters at QB (Clayton Frank) and RB (Remick Kawawaki).
