MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) — Northern Michigan University officials say an 18-year-old freshman on the varsity women’s soccer team who drowned was alone in a pool when she was discovered after a team workout.

The school in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula says Arianna Alioto of Columbia, Mo., drowned Friday at the Physical Education Instructional Facility in Marquette.

Public safety director Mike Bath said Monday a student exercising in an area overlooking the pool reported seeing someone in the water about 30 minutes after the workout ended and teammates left. He says employees found her unresponsive and life-saving attempts were unsuccessful.

Officials say a lifeguard must be present whenever someone is in the pool. They are investigating where the lifeguard was when Alioto was in the pool.

Alioto was redshirted this fall because of a knee injury.
