When parent Jenny Danley clicked “like” on Umpqua Bank’s Facebook page, she never imagined it would result in a $2,000 grant for her son’s school.

But that’s exactly what happened.

Jemtegaard Middle School in Washougal was randomly selected as one of Umpqua’s “Give Back to School Fund” winners. Every ‘like’ generated $1 for the fund, totalling $20,000.

Last week, associates from the Washougal branch visited Jemtegaard to present the check to several faculty and staff members.

The funds will be used for remodeling some of the school’s classrooms, including the special education area. Once the renovations are finished, a pizza lunch will be provided for all students and teachers.

“There are never sufficient resources to address the needs that exist,” said Dawn Tarzian, Washougal School District superintendent. “The thoughtfulness of the family that submitted the grant and the generosity of Umpqua Bank to fund this need are both deeply appreciated by the district. I can hardly wait for our life skills students to step into their classroom after improvements are completed.”

Eve Callahan, senior vice president of corporate communications, said Umpqua employees have had a great time visiting grant-winning schools.

“It’s one of those fun things to do,” she said. “We are always looking at how we can engage the community in giving back and getting involved.”

Umpqua will pay all employees up to 40 hours a year to volunteer at the school or organization of their choice, during working hours.

“Schools and community organizations are open during the day, and that is when they need our help,” she said. “It’s another way to give back.”

Currently, Umpqua is running a “Joy of Giving” campaign through mid-December and will donate $50,000 to organizations which help the community.
