WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Terone Johnson scored 16 points and A.J. Hammons added 13 as Purdue routed Lamar 72-39 on Tuesday night.

The win allowed the young Boilermakers to climb back to .500 after Saturday’s rare nonconference home loss to Xavier.

Boilermakers coach Matt Painter made sure it didn’t happen again Tuesday when his former AAU teammate Pat Knight, the son of former Indiana coach Bob Knight, came to town.

A week earlier, Knight was ejected from a game at Alabama after drawing two technical fouls. He was much more serene at Purdue despite another blowout.

The Boilers (4-4) jumped to an early 19-8 lead, extended the margin to 26-10 and led 36-17 at the half. Lamar (1-7) never challenged in the second half, its eighth consecutive game outside its home arena.

The Cardinals were led by Stan Brown with 14 points, but shot just 30.4 percent from the field.
