Letter: Increasing taxes is a solution

The Columbian

It’s time Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, listens to her constituents, not Grover Norquist. America needs a balanced approach to solving the deficit including increased taxes on wealthier Americans.

Any pretense that taxing the “job creators” harms the economy is pure bunk. Higher rates under President Clinton accompanied a robust economy while lower rates under President George W. Bush gave us fewer jobs.

Eighty prominent CEOs have called for higher taxes on the rich noting that solving the debt crisis now will boost the economy to help all Americans including the rich. Going over the fiscal cliff risks hurting us all. Some polls says 60 percent of Americans support higher taxes on the rich. Only Norquist and Republican representatives like Herrera Beutler are blocking a solution to this.
