Western Carolina overcomes Appalachian State 70-64

CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) — Western Carolina came back from a 10-point halftime deficit to beat Appalachian State 70-64 in a Southern Conference game on Saturday.

Tom Tankelewicz led the Catamounts (4-6, 2-0) with 19 points, Tawaski King had 14 points and eight rebounds, Trey Sumler scored 13 and James Sinclair 11.

Jay Canty led the Mountaineers (1-7, 0-1) with 22 points, Nathan Healy had 15 points and nine rebounds, and Tab Hamilton scored 10.

Western Carolina trailed 49-40 with 11:07 left in the second half but got back into it with an 8-0 run and tied the game at 53 on King’s jumper with 6:28 remaining. The Catamounts took a 57-55 lead with 5:01 left on King’s two free throws. Tankelewicz’s 3-pointer made it 69-64 for the Catamounts with 28 seconds left.

Appalachian State led 36-26 at the half, with the Mountaineers making 10 of 15 foul shots, the Catamounts 2 of 4.
