AIGLE, Switzerland (AP) — Pat McQuaid has dismissed suggestions that three-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond should replace him as president of the International Cycling Union to lead the sport out of its crisis following the Lance Armstrong doping affair.
McQuaid tells The Associated Press that LeMond “knows nothing” about operating elite cycling and anti-doping programs.
The UCI leader says LeMond “has been used” by cycling activists who met in London this month, and “made a mistake” letting them promote his bid to replace McQuaid.
McQuaid says the American rider is “outside cycling, shouting at it looking in.”
The Irish official says he won’t step down, insisting “I need to oversee the action,” as the UCI consults with stakeholders on cycling’s future.
The UCI is cooperating with an independent panel’s investigation into its links to Armstrong.
