A Vancouver man was sentenced Tuesday in Clark County Superior Court to four months in prison for attacking another man with a vodka bottle July 18 at the Value Motel in Hazel Dell.

William E. Coultas Jr., 49, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and third-degree theft in the case. The defendant, who was apparently drunk at the time of the crimes, struck 55-year-old Presley Ewing over the head with a vodka bottle between 25 and 30 times, according to court documents. The two were acquaintances.

Coultas had originally been held in the Clark County Jail on suspicion of one count of second-degree attempted murder, but the charges were later modified.

Clark County sheriff's deputies were dispatched at about 10:30 a.m. early July 19 to the motel, at 708 N.E. 78th St., to find Ewing being treated by medics for facial and head injuries. Inside Ewing's room, blood was splattered on the walls, ceiling, bed and chair, according to court documents.

Ewing survived his injuries and was released from the hospital.

After the incident, Coultas told detectives he didn't remember what happened, according to court documents.

He was sentenced by Judge Rich Melnick and will receive credit for time served, about 145 days.
