Hockey: Winterhawks power past Silvertips, 4-2

The Portland Winterhawks struck for three power-play goals in a 4-2 Western Hockey League victory Friday over the visiting Everett Silvertips at the Rose Garden.

Brendan Leipsic got the Hawks on the board quickly when he finished a great passing sequence with a power play goal 1:46 into the game. Portland then made Everett pay again on a subsequent power play with Derrick Pouliot feeding a terrific cross-ice pass to Adam de Champlain, who beat Everett netminder Austin Lotz to make it 2-0.

The Hawks (26-5-1-0) scored an early goal in the second with Nic Petan netting the team’s third power play marker of the game 2:43 into period.

Taylor Leier made it 4-1 for the Hawks with 12:42 remaining in the second.

Brendan Burke earned his 10th win of the season, making 24 saves on 26 Everett shots.

• The Vancouver Vipers ended a two-game scoreless streak, but couldn’t stop Bellingham in a 4-2 Northern Pacific Hockey League game at Bellingham.Cody Dettman scored two of the Vipers’ goals plus two assists, and Evan Carter had the third goal. Cody Anderson had two assists. Johnathon McCord also had an assist.
