BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — C.J. Reed scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half to lead Georgia Southern to a stunning 78-73 upset of Virginia Tech on Saturday.
Georgia Southern (4-5) opened with an 8-0 run and never trailed, notching its first win over an Atlantic Coast Conference team. The Eagles hit a season-high 11 3-pointers.
Reed’s 3-pointer and layup capped a 12-0 run that spanned both halves to give Georgia Southern a 42-27 lead. The Hokies sliced the 15-point lead to 74-71 on a 3-pointer by Jarell Eddie with 54.3 seconds left, but Cameron Baskerville hit four straight free throws in the final 20 seconds to help the Eagles hold them off.
Reed hit 8 of 16 from the floor, including five 3-pointers. Freshman guard Cleon Roberts added 20 points, hitting 7 of 12, including four 3-pointers.
Virginia Tech (8-2) got a game-high 28 points from guard Erick Green.
