Steps to build the business: General manager Jeff Meiners said his firm is developing new products for new markets. They recently released a diesel-driven portable hydraulic power unit and are working on developing a diesel-driven portable heat unit.
Greatest challenge: Meiners said a great deal of what his company does is considered an engineered product or "made to order." He said it can be challenging to design around special requirements and incorporate all specifications into the existing spatial envelope of a portable unit. Most of the units still have to be legal to be towed on the highway or fit on a trailer.
Favorite part of the job: Meiners enjoys the variety of applications and requirements he sees. The company has done jobs from flood control for small towns in Mexico to municipal sewage lift station bypass to fire-suppression units.
What's ahead: Premier Pump is looking forward to the new year. In addition to new products, new markets are being targeted. They are also adding manufacturing capabilities. The pump company has been getting more involved in fabrication and has just invested in a new powder coating line and sandblasting equipment.
Owner's business history: William Scholtes started Premier Pump and Power in 1999 after a stint in sales at Cornell Pump Company in Clackamas, Ore. Prior to the pump industry he had many small ventures including a promotions business, limousine service, and video productions.
