Talking Points: Tribute from the NFL

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

Before every game Sunday there was a moment of silence in tribute to the victims of the school massacre in Newtown, Conn.

Among the player tributes was one by Giants receiver Victor Cruz who had “Jack Pinto, My Hero” written on his cleats, in honor of a 6-year-old who died.

“I don’t even know how to put it into words,” Cruz said. “There are no words that can describe the type of feeling that you get when a kid idolizes you so much that unfortunately they want to put him in the casket with your jersey on. I can’t even explain it.”

2

Perhaps lost among the NFL on Sunday (perhaps strategically lost?) was the pending trade of R.A. Dickey to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Tweeted Andy Martino (@MartinoNYDN), Mets beat writer for the New York Daily News:

“Pause for a second over the fact that the Mets just traded R.A. Dickey. Traded. R.A. Dickey. Cy Young. Significant day in franchise history.”

Remember how the Seattle Seahawks were going to make quarterback Matt Flynn “the man” this season?

After all, he did have one very good game as starter for the Green Bay Packers last season, throwing for a franchise record 469 yards.

It has now earned him this tweet from Art Thiel (@Art_Thiel) as the QB entered the game in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s blowout in Toronto:

“Matt Flynn, $26 million victory cigar.”
