Kemp, East Carolina beat Gardner-Webb 62-60

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Maurice Kemp had 22 points and nine rebounds to lead East Carolina past Gardner-Webb 62-60 Tuesday night.

Ty Armstrong added six points, three blocks and a game-high 15 rebounds for East Carolina (7-2).

After Donta Harper’s jumper put Gardner-Webb (7-6) ahead 58-54 with 5:02 left to play, both teams failed to make a field goal the rest of the way.

Robert Sampson made two free throws for East Carolina to cut the lead to two, 58-56, and then Miguel Paul tied the game at 58 on two more free throws with 1:50 remaining.

After Kemp and Paul combined for another three makes at the foul line to push the lead to 61-58 with 25 seconds left to play, Kevin Hartley and Tashan Newsome each made 1 of 2 free throws and Gardner-Webb committed a turnover to seal East Carolina’s victory.

Harper led Gardner-Webb with 14 points, but had eight turnovers.
