Isaiah Smith had a big game, but the Chieftains didn’t shoot well enough from the perimeter to stay with Century of Hillsboro, Ore., in a first round game at the Les Schwab Invitational.

Smith had 32 points on 10-of-19 shooting, but the other Chieftains were just 6 of 22 from the field.

“We played well enough to win,” River coach David Long said. “We just didn’t shoot well enough. Isaiah had a great game, but we didn’t help him out enough.”

Century built 34-20 lead by halftime. But the Chieftains rallied with 42-39 by the end of the third quarter, and were still down by three points with five minutes to play.

“I was proud of the way the kids battle back,” Long said. “I told them at halftime that our goal was to get that lead down to seven or eight, and we got it down to three. We were right there, but we just didn’t make enough shots. And we had some untimely mishaps in the fourth quarter.”

Columbia River will play Clackmas (Ore.) in a consolation round game at 9 a.m. Thursday at Liberty High School in Hillsboro.
