Esther Short — Garrett Ruedi had never been on a boat before, so when The Evergreen Inn asked residents to make a wish list, he said he would like to go on a cruise.

The assisted-living community recently launched a new bucket list program, which gives residents the chance to live out a dream despite financial limitations. Ruedi and 13 other residents sailed on the Portland Spirit lunch cruise on Jan. 20 to fulfill his dream.

Ruedi is an active part of The Evergreen Inn family; he goes to school, runs the resident store and goes to church every week, staff members say.

The cruise is the second big adventure for the bucket list program. In December, staff members arranged a private tour of the Boeing assembly plant in Renton for resident and plane enthusiast Robert Meriweather.
