Irsay planning to take time on Manning decision

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Colts owner Jim Irsay is likely to wait until the last minute to decide whether to pay Peyton Manning a $28 million roster bonus.

Irsay told reporters Wednesday that he will continue to monitor Manning’s recovery from Sept. 8 neck surgery and an announcement is unlikely before early next month. The deadline to pay the bonus is March 8.

The four-time league MVP missed every down this season after having his third neck surgery in 19 months. Manning turns 36 in late March and said this week he does not intend to retire.

Irsay says he is willing to pay Manning but must balance the bonus with decisions about the salary cap and what is best for the team.
