Marchand-Arvier tops Vonn in downhill training

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) -- Marie Marchand-Arvier of France had the fastest time in the first training run for a women's World Cup downhill, edging Lindsey Vonn of the United States on Thursday.

Vonn is seeking her 50th World Cup victory and was 0.21 seconds behind the Frenchwoman. Marchand-Arvier missed a gate, though.

Daniela Merighetti of Italy was third, 0.68 seconds back.

Vonn leads the overall World Cup standings. The downhill is slated for Saturday, before a super-G on Sunday.

The training was delayed by an hour to clear fresh overnight snow in freezing weather.
